Метро Баррикадная имеет только один выход в город, поэтому нам легко было ориентироваться. С правой стороны от него находится одна из семи Сталинских высоток, — жилой дом на Кудринской площади. (Саму площадь на выходе из метро вы не увидите, она расположена сзади высотки). А прямо возле метро есть небольшой парк, чье название я искала достаточно долго, но так и не нашла. Вы проходите этот сквер, переходите под светофором дорогу, выложенную брусчаткой, поднимаетесь по лестнице, пересекаете сквер по диагонали и доходите до Садового кольца. Если идти прямо по Садовому, как раз справа от себя увидите американский флаг. Для всех студентов координатором заботливо были распечатан весь маршрут, который, как вы видите, я помню до сих пор.
Если сбор на вокзале был назначен на шесть утра, то здесь уже надо было быть около семи. Точнее, не у Посольства, а у соседнего здания. (Зеленое такое, помнится?)
Указание координатора выполнили почти все (за исключением тех, кто опоздал с завтрака). И вот, значит, стоим мы всей толпой, (холодно настолько, что изо рта идет пар), слушаем координатора, пытаемся согреться, и даже не думаем знакомиться друг с другом. Благо, на тот момент была сеть «Контакт» (я регистрировалась там год назад, как раз!). Координатор вела перекличку, и можно было запомнить фамилии и имена участников, и потом с ними списаться. Парочку фамилий запомнила и я.
«Уф, везёт, наверно, тем, у кого собеседование назначено на апрельили май!», — думали мы, когда шли к Посольству. Ведь ещё предстояло отстоять очередь, тоже на улице. Знаете, как мы успокаивали себя на холоде? (Уже начинали знакомиться! J) Где-то, кто-то слышал, что, якобы, те группы студентов, которых приглашают на собеседования позже, получают меньше виз. Потому что, мол, заканчивается лимит рабочих мест, определяемый Конгрессом.Особенно, если все «зимние» прошли благосклонность консулов и получили визу.
— Что за чепуху вы несёте? – услышала нас менеджер Центра Обмена. – Студенты приглашаются по дате регистрации на программу и по фамильному списку. А вот предстоящую тревогу по поводу дадут или не дадут визу, вы испытываете меньше. Вот и вся разница! 🙂
Barrikadnaya metro station has the only exit out to the city, so it was easy for us to navigate. On the right side of it is one of «the Seven Sisters»*, the residential building on Kudrinskaya Square. (You will not see the square at the exit of the metro, it is located behind the skyscraper). And right next to the metro station there is a small park, name of that I have been looking for a long time, but have not found. You pass this square, cross the cablestone road under the traffic light, go up the stairs, cross the square diagonally and reach the Garden Ring**. If you go straight along the Ring, you’ll see the American flag just to your right. The entire route was carefully printed by the coordinator for students, and, as you can see, I still remember it.
If the meeting at the station was scheduled for six in the morning, so it was necessary to be there at about seven then. Or rather, not at the Embassy, but at the building next to it. (Green one, remember?)
Almost everyone followed the coordinator’s advice (with the exception of those who were late from breakfast). And so, all right, we were standing in a crowd, (it was so cold that we could see our breath going out), We were listening to the coordinator, trying to keep warm, and not even thinking to get to know each other. Fortunately, at that time there was a social network «VKontakte»*** (I registered there a year ago, just in time!). The coordinator was taking the roll-call, and it was possible to remember the first and second names of the participants, and to find them on “VK” then. I remembered a couple of names too.
“Oof, how lucky should be those whose interview is scheduled for April or May!”, — we thought when we were coming to the Embassy. After all, there still was a line to wait, also outside. Can you imagine how we calmed each other down in the cold? (Already starting to get acquainted! ) The groups of students who were invited for the interviews later were said to receive fewer visas. Because the limit of jobs determined by Congress was believed to be ending. Especially, if all the «winter» students passed the favor of the consuls and received a visa.
— What nonsense are you talking about? — the manager of the exchange center heard our chat. — Students are invited by the date of registration for the program and by the nominal list. But the upcoming anxiety about whether you get visa or not, you feel less. That’s the only difference!
